I get asked about my style all the time – ‘What’s your style secret?’ It’s a flattering query, but honestly, I’m going to burst your bubble right now: I don’t have one. Shocker, I know! But I do have some practical tips that have guided my wardrobe choices over the years. Keep reading to discover them…
Comfort Is Key
Comfort is king. I’ve made some serious fashion faux pas in my time, from bad footwear choices to cheap fabrics and ill-fitting jeans – Oy! These days, comfort is non-negotiable. Even when I’m shopping, I make sure to follow this rule: if something isn’t comfy, it’s going back on the rack. I’ve spent and lost far too much money on uncomfortable clothes and shoes just because they were ‘in.’ No more. I’ve learned the hard way that style isn’t worth the pain.

embrace Simplicity
Some might interpret simplicity as ‘boring,’ but for me, simplicity is key to putting together my outfits. Sometimes I don’t know what to wear or pressed for time. When this is the case, I revert to my easy 3-piece outfit formula. This way it’s easy to pull off and can be worn with anything from layering to shoes of your choice. That’s why I love pieces that can be mixed and matched effortlessly. This method is my secret weapon!

the power of accessories
As you may already know, I’m obsessed with accessories! I believe the transformation of an outfit comes down to the right pieces. Layering different belts, scarves, hats, and jewelry is my favorite way to transform a look. I stick to gold because I know it works for me and, well, it’s just what I like. And let’s not forget the finishing touches: makeup, manicured nails, and a signature scent can truly elevate an ensemble.
These little details can make a huge difference!

Quality Over Quantity
This doesn’t rule out the fast fashion. There are some items which, over the last couple of years, I’ve invested in. Of course, you all know that I love my designer shoes and bags, but some fast fashion is more than capable of producing quality clothing. You just have to spend a little longer finding it – I go over some affordable luxury brands in a previous post. I read the labels and look to see what garments are made from—100% polyester is something I just have to walk away from. It won’t wash well, it won’t do the environment any favors (yes, I know I’m not an angel on that front, but baby steps), and it will not be comfortable (refer to my comfort rule).
Fast fashion brands like H&M, Zara, Mango, & Other Stories, Topshop, and Aritzia are all capable of producing incredible clothing using fabrics like wool, silk, and cotton. It might mean you pay a little more, but in some cases, a 100% cotton t-shirt will only cost a bit more than a viscose t-shirt, and I can tell you which one will last a heck of a lot longer.
A few years ago, my wardrobe was about five times the size it is now, with hangers straining to hold more than one item. But as I became clearer on what exactly my personal style was, I realized I didn’t need all this ‘stuff.’ I began clearing out all the unnecessary.
I wrote a list of items I wanted to invest in, like a leather jacket, black blazer, long winter coat, comfortable jeans, ankle boots, etc., and when I could afford these things, I would ‘upgrade’ them. Again, this doesn’t mean you have to spend a fortune on these items—just shop a little wiser.

And there you have it, my style secrets. Remember, fashion is about expressing yourself and feeling good in what you wear. Stick to what makes you comfortable, keep it simple, invest in quality pieces, and never underestimate the power of the right jewelry. Happy styling!
